Nail Mates Remover Caps

Nail Mates: Product Review

My neon manicure using OPI GelColor in Life Gave Me Lemons got a lot of love, but after wearing it for 2.5 weeks, I felt overdue for a change. My Nail Mates removal caps had just been delivered, so it was the perfect opportunity to try them out for a review.

I used CND Brisa Lite Clear Sculpting Gel underneath the neon gel polish, so I filed down the color before starting to soak off–just like I do when using my normal CND remover wraps. As a side note, I realized that the Brisa Lite looked like it was stained by the neon OPI since I had definitely filed the sculpting gel down thin, so I suspect that color is a nail stainer. Fortunately, there was no trace of staining on my nails after removal!

Nail Mates are pink finger caps with white spongy pad inserts. It took me several tries to figure out how much remover to use (in my case, how many pumps), but it was an easy process after that. I saturated the rounded end of the pads, which was two pumps using my Menda pump bottle, then placed that end against my nail. I wrapped the rest of the pad around the free edge of my nail and then to the bottom of my fingertip, and then covered it with the pink cap. (Note: Nail Mates actually does not recommend wrapped the pads around this way, and instead suggests just laying the pad on top of the finger unless needed for smaller fingers. I did it the other way first because I’m used to doing it that with other wrap types)

These fit snugly and I could move my hands around without any falling off. They were more snug than either foil wraps or the CND wraps–enough that I was aware of them the entire time. On one hand, it felt strange since I wasn’t used to it, but it was definitely not too snug and I was glad to have them fit well where it was needed for effective removal.

My removal time was was bit faster as compared to using the CND wraps and it was neat to see the remaining product come off in big pieces.

This is right after removal, and my nails were in good condition.

After cuticle clean-up and cuticle oil, comfortable nails ready for my next mani!

The Nail Mates Q&A notes that this is typical: the inserts did come out stained pink but there was no pink on my nails or skin. These pads are replaceable and are listed on the manufacturer’s site as $14.95 for 200 pads with free shipping (http://shop.nailmates.net). A single user could reuse the same pads, but a tech would need replacements for each client.

As a professional, I had concerns about possible drawbacks.

* The first was about cleaning these between clients, but it ended up being easier than I expected to clean the insides of the caps, and even after leaving them to soak in Barbicide overnight they were still fine. I used them for a second soak-off after the Barbicide soak, and it went as well as this round. (Note: I’m sure all techs know that disinfection time in Barbicide is only 10 minutes, and that to be practical you would need to have at least two service sets. I left a few in overnight just to see what would happen to them if they were left in for an extended period of time. I’m sure we’ve all left in some nippers/pushers/curettes in overnight after a long work day at some point or another. I was happy to see they were still fine, but the manufacturer does warn that it could cause product breakdown when done repeatedly)

* I noticed that some of the caps seemed more stretched out after use than others. The caps I used on my thumbs looked wider than the ones that had been used on my pinkies, so I’m not sure if these would still be snug enough for smaller fingers later.

* These are not currently being made for toes, so you would need to find another option for removing gel polish pedicures, or try the company’s suggestion of cutting slits on the sides to make them large enough for big toes (I did not try that). A big toe version is, however, in the works right now.
